Kongsberg K-Chief Integrated Automation System — Familiarization Course

The Kongsberg Integrated Automation System · Familiarization Course package is designed for ship engineers who want to understand the principles of construction and operation of the Kongsberg K-Chief IAS, especially if they have no prior practical experience with this system.

The Kongsberg K-Chief model range includes several generations of systems, including K-Chief 500, K-Chief 600, and K-Chief 700. Despite the evolution of the interface and functionality, the basic logic of the system’s construction, signal processing, and operator interaction with the IAS retains common principles. This package focuses on the modern K-Chief 700 system.

The course allows you not just to study the operator interface, but to understand what is behind the monitor screen: how the system architecture is built, how Operator Stations, controllers, and I/O modules interact, how input and output signals are processed, how alarms are generated, and how control commands are executed.

The K-Chief/K-Safe itself is built on a modular principle using Operator Stations, processing and I/O units, and communication between the main system elements is organized through redundant networks and I/O bus.

The package covers:

• Structure and main components of K-Chief IAS;

• Working with HMI, Process Views, alarms, trends, and Function Modules;

• Logic of I/O signals, searching and analyzing connections between signals;

• Principles of alarm & monitoring and interaction with equipment;

• Watch Call System and functions related to UMS/E0;

• Fundamentals of the Power Management System and other integrated K-Chief functions depending on the vessel’s configuration.

The K-Chief interface allows you to work with process views, statuses, alarms, and equipment values directly through the Operator Station.

A distinctive feature of this course is its practical orientation. The material was recorded together with a Chief Engineer directly from on board a vessel equipped with IAS K-Chief 700, so theoretical provisions are supplemented with real working situations, system interfaces, and practical explanations.

This approach allows you to study the system not as a set of separate menus and buttons, but to understand the logic of signal passage from the sensor and I/O module to display, alarm, or control action on the Operator Station.

This is especially important for junior engineers, as well as for experienced specialists who will be working on a vessel with a modern integrated automation system for the first time.

The main goal of the package is to provide the necessary foundation so that when working with Kongsberg K-Chief, you understand not only what to press, but also why the system reacts in that particular way.
