\n\u00b7 Methane (CH4)<\/p>\n
Modern engines: environmentally friendly or not?
\nDual-fuel methane engines cannot be called completely clean. True, they don\u2019t contain any sulfur (which reduces SOx), but carbon still remaining – and carbon trap the heat and affect for global warming.<\/p>\n
Are there alternatives?
\nYes. Modern leaders such as MAN Energy Solutions offer LGIP engines that run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).<\/p>\n
What are the advantages already now?<\/p>\n
\u00b7 The foundation is MAN ME electronic engines with digital control.
\n\u00b7 Even on HFO\/MGO, they comply with environmental regulations.
\n\u00b7 When switching to LPG, savings are achieved (fuel is cheaper) along with a 13-20% reduction in CO2.<\/p>\n
What engine ranges does MAN offer?<\/p>\n
\u00b7 ME-GI (methane)
\n\u00b7 ME-GIE (ethane)
\n\u00b7 ME-LGIM (methanol)
\n\u00b7 ME-GA (methane)
\n\u00b7 ME-LGIP (LPG)<\/p>\n
But there is a nuance:
\nNone of these engines yet deliver zero emissions \u2013 carbon is present in all types of fuel. The most promising solution is ammonia (NH3), where carbon is excluded. <\/p>\n
Colleagues, conclusions:
\nEnvironmental regulations are changing the rules of the game in shipping. Technology is evolving very rapidly, and we, as ship engineers, need to actively adopt new solutions in order to stay ahead of the curve.<\/p>\n
