About this course

MACGREGOR Hatch Covers — Hydraulic System, Maintenance & Testing

This course is dedicated to the design, operation, and maintenance of MACGREGOR hydraulic hatch covers, widely used on modern bulk carriers and container vessels.

The course covers three main types of hatch covers:

Folding & Lift-Away Hatch Covers

Side-Rolling Hatch Covers

Piggy-Back Hatch Covers

Special attention is given to the design and operating principles of the hydraulic hatch cover system. The course explains the Hydraulic Power Unit, hydraulic cylinders, control components, and the main aspects of system operation, inspection, and maintenance.

A separate section is dedicated to cargo hold weathertightness. It covers hatch cover sealing arrangements, rubber packing condition and maintenance, drainage channels and valves, as well as practical methods used to verify hatch cover tightness.

Practical Procedures

The course includes a detailed review of:

Hose Test procedures;

Ultrasonic Tightness Testing;

hatch cover preparation prior to cargo operations;

specific considerations related to grain loading;

procedures aimed at preventing water ingress into cargo holds and protecting the cargo.

The course is designed not only to explain the construction of MACGREGOR hatch covers, but also to provide a practical understanding of the tasks that marine engineers may face during daily vessel operation.

Who This Course Is For

This course will be useful for Marine Engineers, Engine Cadets, and Motormen who want to improve their understanding of hydraulic hatch cover systems and their maintenance.

It is especially relevant for seafarers preparing to move into Fourth Engineer or Third Engineer positions, as hatch cover hydraulic equipment and associated systems are often included in the area of responsibility of watchkeeping engineers on modern vessels.

The main objective of the course is to provide not only a general overview, but a practical understanding of the design, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting principles, and tightness testing of cargo hatch covers and cargo holds.
